Delphiniums in the South-West
The Exbury Gardens Connection
First Announcement
In the latter part of 2007, two Officers of the Society met with Mr Nicholas de Rothschild with a view to reaching agreement on two important arrangements. The first of these was the establishment of delphinium plantings in the herbaceous borders at Exbury Gardens. The Society would be acting in an advisory capacity in this project but would, whenever possible, help in providing cultivars. It was agreed that the plantings would consist of a minimum of three plants of a cultivar and that the whole emphasis would be on delphiniums in association with other herbaceous perennials. The first phase of this project would take place in the period 2008 - 2010. This project is of immense importance to the Society in a number of ways, not least the one of publicity aimed at bringing the attention of the public to the existence of The Delphinium Society. The longer term aim will be the establishment of a National Plant Collection at Exbury.
The second project is for a delphinium show to be held in June 2009. The details of this project are to be discussed later in the year but it is hoped that other societies might wish to participate also. This project would be immensely important in furthering the interests of the Society in the South-West of England. Any member living in the South-West who wishes to become involved in this project is asked to contact the Promotions & Publicity Secretary initially. His e-mail address is roger.beauchamp@btinternet.com and his telephone number is 01895 464694. He looks forward to hearing from members in the region in connection with either or both of these two projects.
